Volunteer to Start a High Desert Neighborhood Watch!

If you are interested in High Desert safety, you should think about forming a Neighborhood Watch program on your street. Crime experts say this is one of the most effective steps residents can take to protect themselves and their property.

It might seem intimidating to start a Neighborhood Watch, but there are many resources to help you. The first step is getting agreement among a group of neighbors that they would like to cooperate on this important endeavor. After a neighborhood decides they would like to participate, they can follow the step-by-step guidance for forming a Neighborhood Watch that is provided by APD Crime Prevention (www.cabq.gov/police/crime-prevention-safety/starting-a-neighborhood-watch).

Your village’s Voting Member(s) can be a helpful resource in navigating this process and using High Desert resources to support you.

When you're ready to start your own Neighborhood Watch group, call Albuquerque Police Department's Crime Prevention Manager at 505-244-6644. You can also contact HOAMCO (505-314-5862).

How to Report a Crime

How should you go about reporting a crime or suspected criminal activity to the police and High Desert Security?

There are two types of situations which require reporting: emergencies and non-emergencies.

Emergencies? Immediately Call 911!

An emergency call is defined as a situation where a person’s life or property is in danger or threatened.

"In-progress calls" is the term used by police when  crimes are being committed at the time of your report.

All emergency calls are made first to 911 and then to High Desert Security, our local High Desert patrol, by calling 485-5658.

Some Examples of Emergency Calls:
   1. Accident with injuries, rape, attempted suicide, shooting and stabbings
   2. Strangers forcibly entering neighbor’s house or car
   3. Strangers carrying household articles from neighbor’s house
   4. Fire calls
   5. Person injured or bleeding
   6. Someone trying to gain entrance to your home. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP THEM YOURSELF.
If your house is broken into while you were gone, do not enter the house!

When you call 911 for a police, fire or medical emergency, be prepared to provide much of the information noted in the list of details under "Be a Good Witness," as well as your name, address and telephone number.

Non-Emergency Calls To Albuquerque Police Department: Call 242-COPS(2677)
A non-emergency call is a situation where a person’s life and or property is not in immediate danger, but a police officer is needed to respond to investigate and take a report.

Some Examples of Emergency Calls:
   1. Smashed doors or windows in unoccupied homes or stores
   2. Abandoned car on the street
   3. Someone finding a large sum of money and offering to share it or offering merchandise at unusually low prices
   4. Persons loitering near a school
   5. Information and rumors of impending crimes
   6. Police assistance or medical transportation in a non-emergency.

For these calls, dial 242-COPS (2677). If a police report is needed and an officer is not required at the scene, you may make a police report over the phone.

Roof Color Requirements

High Desert homeowners considering replacing their roofs now have a one-page summary of HDROA's roofing color requirements, suitable for sharing with roofing contractors as decisions on color and materials are made.

Owners installing a new roof are reminded that any external change to the dwelling requires prior approval by the Modification Committee (MC). The MC has a “fast-track” process to approve roof replacements when specifications are identical to the original approved roof. Proposals to change the roof materials will require full review by the MC, which meets monthly. See Online Forms for more information about submitting a modification request to HOAMCO.

Services include responding to fire and rescue situations, providing additional surveillance of property when owners are on vacation, responding to alarm calls when notified, assisting in looking for missing persons or pets, responding to calls regarding suspicious persons or vehicles, and even assisting with vehicle failures.

A Little Bit About Our Village

The Wilderness Cañon is High Desert’s newest and smallest village. There will be 19 homes when building is complete sometime in 2021. We have one gate located at High Desert and Elevada. We enjoy beautiful city and mountain views from our homes nestled high against the hills.

Vehicle Gates

Security Gates: For enhanced security, Wilderness Cañon features locked vehicle and pedestrian gates, plus a 24/7 Security Patrol (shared by all of High Desert). Currently the gates are locked from 6pm to 6am daily. When new construction is complete the gates will be locked 24/7.

Vehicle Gates: One gate allows for vehicle access to Wilderness Cañon.  You can program your vehicle or get a remote “clicker”. Residents have a 4-digit code on the entry box for guests, plus a 4-digit code for personal use. This information is available from HOAMCO management company office (505-888-4479).

You should already have a remote “clicker” to activate the mechanism that opens the gates, similar to your garage door opener. Once you pull through, the gate will automatically close behind you.

Also, you should have received a magnetic gate card. This card is coded to send a signal to open the gate when contact is made with the metal entry pads located on the gate control posts at either vehicle gate. Note that you must physically place your card on the metal pad in order to signal the gate to open.

For guest entry, instruct your visitors to scroll down to your name on the phone keypad display, press the “Call” key and wait for you to answer your phone. Once you have identified the caller, you simply press “9” on your phone keypad, which sends a beep signal to open the gates.

IMPORTANT: The vehicle gates operate dozens and dozens of times each day, so some normal wear and tear is inevitable. Should you have problems or difficulties entering a gate, please report the trouble to HOAMCO as soon as possible.

Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to open a gate by force, as this can result in serious and expensive damage to the mechanism. The cost of repairs for such damage normally is taken from the Village’s expense reserve and could, at some point, create the need to increase assessments to our residents.
